Testing exoskeletons: what matters at the workstation

An exoskeleton can be tried in minutes. Whether people can work well with it over longer periods needs to be assessed at the intended workstation.

What was tried in Foshan

The HUNIC SoftExo exchange combined fitting, hands-on trials and technical questions. Participants could discuss how the system fitted and how movement felt while wearing it.

That feedback helps formulate questions for a workplace test. The published report provides no robust measurements of sustained load reduction, productivity or health outcomes. Those effects cannot be inferred from it.

Describe the task first

“Lifting and carrying” is too broad a specification. Reaching into a deep container, guiding a part at waist height and moving between workstations are different tasks. Space, workwear and other equipment also belong in the brief.

A short sequence of recurring movements gives users, occupational-safety staff and the supplier a common basis for discussion. It also shows which parts of the job the trial actually covers.

Involve the people who will use it

In a pilot, intended users should try putting on, adjusting and removing the equipment themselves. Record feedback on freedom of movement, comfort and interference with the workstation systematically. Individual positive impressions are insufficient for a department-wide decision.

  • Which adjustments does each user need, and can they be reproduced reliably?
  • During which steps do users find the equipment helpful or obstructive?
  • Who handles instruction, cleaning, storage and feedback?

Design the pilot around a decision

Before starting, define the task, participants, duration and comparison conditions. Qualified staff must also determine whether and under what conditions workplace use is appropriate. This article does not replace occupational-health or safety assessment.

The outcome may be a further test, a workstation change or a decision against the equipment. Document the reasoning: which observation supports the next step, and which claim remains an expectation?
